Reflections on Being Black and Male in Engineering: What Whiteness Taught Me About Success in STEM - STEM Week DEI Series "What is your STEM Story?"
Guest Speaker - Dr. James Holly, Jr.
The harmful experiences Black people endure within engineering education in the United States is well-researched. Yet many researchers stop short of examining the ways white cultural norms (i.e., whiteness) shape teaching and learning in engineering, and STEM more broadly. Moreover, this omitted analysis of whiteness allows deficit views of Black people to persist in shaping justifications for the low presence of Black people in engineering. This presentation will center on the meta-narratives within engineering that protect the people and policies that perpetuate dehumanization. These reflections are formed by my experiences as a Black man navigating engineering education and becoming an engineering education researcher, though I suspect these narratives will resonate with Black women and other members of racially minoritized groups across the STEM disciplinary spectrum.
